WASHINGTON –The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that it will not sell Nexium, a generic version of the prescription drug Prilosec, to patients in a new clinical trial.
The FDA said that the drug, which contains the active ingredient esomeprazole magnesium, is not approved for use in the United States.
Patients who take Nexium for heartburn, nausea and other gastrointestinal disorders should stop taking the drug and see a doctor immediately.
“The FDA is committed to protecting patients and our country from potentially dangerous side effects of prescription drugs,” said FDA Commissioner FrankIreekretje. “This approval sends a very strong message to our patients about the importance of safety when they take prescription drugs.”
The drug is used to treat more than 1,500 disorders, including heartburn, diarrhea, nausea, acid reflux and abdominal pain. It can also be used to prevent heart attacks and strokes, including heart attacks in people who have had them.
In addition to treating heartburn, Nexium can treat other conditions that affect the stomach and intestines, including ulcers caused by stomach acid.
